What is Cosmetic dentistry?

Cosmetic dentistry is a very popular option for an individual wanting to have a near flawless set of teeth. It involves a selection of procedures to correct imperfections of the teeth that may be inherent or acquired due to poor oral hygiene. Most of the methods employed are quite safe if performed by a skilled dental practitioner.

Types of Cosmetic Dentistry Procedures

Dentists and orthodontists practise a variety of techniques that could enhance the appearance of your teeth. These have been detailed below.

Teeth Whitening – It is common for teeth to acquire stains due to smoking or an over indulgence of tea or coffee. Dentists use a variety of bleaching products to remove the stains. You may arrange for a couple of sessions with your dental practitioner to get the bleaching procedure done. Alternatively, your dentist could prescribe a product to be used at home. The second option is convenient but may take up to four weeks to be effective.

Bonding of Teeth – Bonding is a suitable cosmetic dentistry option if your teeth are cracked or have spaces between them. Dentists use tooth coloured resinous substances as bonding materials to cover the gaps or cracks. A single session is sufficient for the application of the bonding material. The effect of bonding can endure for several years.

Tooth Veneers – Tooth veneers are shells customised for an individual. They are made from resinous plastics or porcelain and cover the front surfaces of the teeth. Dentists use veneers for hiding stains, cracks and gaps between teeth. Veneers are used to conceal crooked or badly shaped teeth. Unlike bonding, placing veneers over teeth is not reversible. The whole procedure may take two or three visits to a dental clinic.

Dental Crowns – A dental crown is a protective covering for a whole tooth. It is used to cover a broken or a badly decayed tooth. The crown, also known as a cap is made from porcelain or acrylic fused with a metallic substance to withstand a high biting pressure. Dental crowns are particularly recommended after root canal treatment to offer protection to the concerned teeth.

Dental Implants – Dental implants constitute a permanent arrangement for replacing missing teeth. They are metal (titanium) devices installed surgically into the jawbone by a periodontist. Artificial teeth or crowns are inserted into the metal structures and function as natural teeth.

Shaping of Teeth – Shaping of teeth involves resizing and moulding the enamel of the teeth. The enamel is the outer covering of a tooth. The dentist files and removes a part of the enamel to make the shape of the tooth even. This process is not recommended for teeth with a poor covering of enamel.

Facts to Remember
It is advisable to practise good oral hygiene to maintain the effects of cosmetic dentistry. Regular flossing and brushing are recommended. It is desirable to rinse your mouth immediately after eating or drinking to avoid staining of the teeth.

Advantages of Cosmetic Dentistry

You may avail of cosmetic dentistry procedures to improve the appearance of your teeth. This may restore your self esteem. Techniques like bonding of teeth and insertion of dental crowns close gaps between teeth and may lead to a lower incidence of tooth decay.
