At the beginning of every year, many people start to think of what they want their resolutions to be over the next 365 days. This New Year’s, why not make a different kind of resolution? Traveling more and trying new restaurants are great goals to set, but why not resolve to take better care of your oral health? Read on for four ideas for New Year’s resolutions that will help you achieve a healthy smile and better overall oral health.
#1: Visit the Dentist
If you’ve only been going to the dentist when an oral health issue arises, now’s the time to change your ways! Though many people think that a dental visit is only necessary if they’re showing symptoms of oral heat issues, that isn’t the case. Visiting your dentist two times per year allows your hygienist to thoroughly clean your teeth and gumline, therefore lessening your chances of cavities and gum disease. Your dentist will then conduct a thorough examination of the oral cavity. If they find any issues, they’ll administer treatment to keep them from progressing further.
#2: Brush and Floss Better
Brush your teeth once in the morning before you eat breakfast to remove bacteria that accumulated in your mouth overnight. Before you go to bed, brush again and floss to remove plaque and food particles in places that your toothbrush can’t reach. This will lessen your chances of developing oral health issues and keep your breath smelling fresh and clean.
#3: Cut Out Tobacco
If you smoke cigarettes or use other tobacco products, you’re actively working against your oral health. Not only do these raise your chances of developing gum disease, but they’re also linked to oral and a range of other cancers. If you need help kicking the habit, ask your dentist, doctor, or therapist for resources.
#4: Eat A Tooth-Approved Diet
If you eat a lot of sweet, starchy, acidic, and carb-heavy foods, cut back to keep your smile healthier. Instead, incorporate more tooth-approved foods into your diet, including:
- Pears, carrots, apples, celery, and other fresh, crisp fruits and vegetables
- Low-fat or fat-free dairy products like cheese and yogurt
- Fish like sardines, salmon, tuna, and mackerel
- Spinach, kale, lettuce, and other leafy greens
- Lean meats like chicken, turkey, and beef
- Brazil nuts, almonds, and cashews
Plan to take better care of your oral health this year with these four resolutions. By next New Year’s eve, you’ll be sporting a brag-worthy smile!
