Invisalign treatment is an orthodontic treatment option that uses clear aligner trays to move your teeth into a more ideal position over several months or years. It can be used to correct bite and alignment issues to give you a healthier and more beautiful smile. While wearing your aligners 20-22 hours each day is key to a successful and discreet treatment, so is keeping them clean. Continue reading to learn six helpful tips for cleaning Invisalign.

Tip #1: Create a Morning Hygiene Routine

Brushing your teeth every morning is already part of your oral hygiene routine, but make sure to modify it for cleaning Invisalign. Take your aligners out of your mouth when you wake up and give them a good brushing. Repeat this process before bed as well.

Tip #2: Rinse Your Aligners When You Remove Them

If plaque or food particles build up on your aligners, this will raise your risk of developing cavities or other oral health issues. To prevent this rinse off your aligners when you take them out to eat or drink something.

Tip #3: Use the Right Cleaning Agents

Be sure to use the right things when cleaning Invisalign. There are a few options that can be mixed into warm water, including:

  • Invisalign crystals, which are made specifically for aligners
  • Hydrogen peroxide at low concentrations
  • A tablespoon of baking soda
  • Distilled white vinegar mixed with 75% warm water
  • Antibacterial soap that’s clear and unscented

Tip #4: Soak Your Aligners At Least Once Daily

Soaking your aligners at least once per day is another important part of keeping them clean and clear. You can do this at the end of the day while brushing and flossing or while eating a meal.

Tip #5: Don’t Eat or Drink with Your Aligners On

Whenever you consume anything other than water, be sure to take your aligners off. If you don’t, they may become stained or damaged. If they’re damaged to the point where they no longer fit your smile properly, they will have to be replaced. Your teeth might shift out of position while you wait on your new trays to be ready.

Tip #6: Don’t Leave Your Aligners Out in the Open Air

When you take your aligners out, be sure to store them somewhere safe. Rather than placing them on a napkin while you eat, store them in a case so they stay safe and aren’t accidentally thrown away.

Aligners are a great option for crooked or misaligned smiles, but you have to make sure to take good care of them. With the above information, you can keep your smile healthy, your aligners clear, and your treatment on the right track!
