How do Traditional Braces Work?
Traditional braces are orthodontic systems that use brackets affixed to the front surfaces of teeth to place pressure and shift the smile into the ideal position. The pressure is created by connecting wires through the brackets that are periodically adjusted to change the amount of pressure on individual teeth until they achieve their proper placement. In addition to these bracket and wire systems, we may also use bands to place pressure and shift the entire bite. This is necessary for those patients whose smiles protrude too far forward or to one side. These patients have conditions often referred to as over, under, or crossbite.
Should I Consider Traditional Braces?
Braces are still the best treatment option for many people who want to realign their smiles. They allow us to shift even the most severely misaligned teeth into the ideal positions. Some of the benefits of orthodontic treatment include:
- Correctly aligned teeth are easier to clean. When teeth are evenly spaced, patients can easily remove the plaque buildup between teeth and at the gum line.
- Properly aligned teeth wear evenly, and they reduce the risk for oral health conditions like teeth grinding and clenching and jaw joint malfunction.
- A correctly aligned smile looks great, so you can smile with complete confidence in any personal or professional situation.
How Long Does Braces Treatment Take?
Each braces treatment plan is unique. If you just need to close some gaps in your smile, you may be able to complete treatment in 12 to 18 months. If you need more advanced alignment help for full mouth concerns like over, under, and crossbite, the treatment plan may take 24 months or longer. Even the most advanced orthodontic treatment plans are typically completed within 36 months. Throughout the course of your treatment, you will need to visit our dental office every three to six weeks, so we can make the necessary adjustments to your brackets and wires.
What Happens After I Complete My Braces Treatment?
Following your braces treatment plan, you will need to wear a retainer. Luckily, we can often provide clear retainers, so you can start sharing your flawless new smile. It’s important that you wear the retainer as directed because, without this appliance, your teeth can shift back out of alignment. When teeth are moved during orthodontic treatment, the connection between the tooth roots and the gums and supportive bone structures is weakened. This is necessary in order to reposition the teeth. Retainers hold your teeth in the new placement while the underlying support structures are rebuilt. This takes time, but once teeth are fully anchored in their new position, the results are beautiful.
